Highway Department
The information on this page of the Town of Otsego's Web site is for the purposes of keeping Town citizens up-to-date with information on the Town's Highway Department. This information will often be in draft form and is subject to change as weather and circumstances change. The Highway Supervisor, currently Bill Hribar Sr., is elected by the people, and he runs his department at his sole discretion. The Town Board Supervisor is in charge of the budget. The Town Board monitors the budget.
The Highway Department supplies fundamental and essential services to the Town of Otsego: maintaining our Town's roads and making them clear and safe for winter driving both by the general public and for our school buses. They also maintain the roads' margins, keeping them clear of brush and other obstructions. They improve water drainage by creating sluice pipes under or beside the roads. The unit also maintains signs for road identification and traffic regulation.
Blacktopping roads, after-storm clean up; dust control; roadside mowing, bridge and guard rail maintenance; and dead animal pick up are all jobs that help keep our Town attractive and safe. And they also annually mow any cemetery that does not have a designated custodian!
The crew also carries out much of the needed general maintenance on the heavy equipment and machinery that your tax dollars purchase, including spring replacement, brake replacement and repair, preparation for New York state safety inspections, as well as hydraulic and pneumatic repairs. They can fabricate and/or repair many parts for the plows and accomplish any welding needed on the trucks, equipment, or furnaces.
The Town current employs six full-time crew members. The Highway Garage is located on Cemetery Road.
